Simple & powerful, candles burn away unwanted or excess energy, transform energy, amplify intentions, soothe turmoil or frenetic vibes, create a magical atmosphere, provide an offering or a portal for divination & serve as a totem for focus & guidance.
A candle should be new & dedicated to the specific purpose of the spell or ritual. Used candles carry residual energy that may interfere with your intention. Left over wax should be read for any divination or prophetic messages & then reused. Collect all remainder wax to perform end of cycle or amplification spells.
A standard, white, tapered dinner candle is perfectly useful for any candle magic, but candles should be selected for by type, color, wax, wick & dressings.
Fire magick creates a liminal vessel for communication via flame, smoke, wax & sound. Pay attention to your candle, not just for sensibale safety, but to witness messages.
Candle Type
-
Smaller than pillar candles, but larger than chime, votive candles are often religious or ceremonial & require daily devotion.
-
Taper candles represent a direct & focused intention, one that can pierce through any dimensions. Common & versatile, they are best for daily use. I burn taper candles for housewarming, ambiance or to set a morning or evening intention. Excellent for all ceremonies & festivities, taper candles are also good for spells that provide quick results or require a focused intent. Most taper candles require a candle holder to burn safely.
-
Tea lights are small, disc-like candles encased in metal or plastic containers & burn for a few hours. I use tea lights for meditation, offerings & setting a magickal ambiance. They are ideal for ceremonial grids & rituals that involve multiple candles. They are great for short bursts of energy for an altar & when practicing magick in a confined space, such as your bedroom or studio apartment.
-
These candles are created from poured wax in glass or another container. As they typically burn for an extended period, they are excellent for long-term spells & rituals. The container also sustains the energy of the spell, adding to the power of the spell's longevity. Continuous spells as well as spells for protection, prosperity & long-term goals, such as manifesting money, health or love, or other purification spells are ideal to use with poured candles. They can be powerful for home clearing & blessing magick, hex-breaking, chord-cutting, road opening & other spells for deep release.
-
Freestanding, grounded & strong, pillar candles share many of the same uses as poured candles in terms of longevity. These candles add an extra potency of endurance & stability to your spell. They are excellent candles for dressing, due to their large & versatile surface area. They are powerful for casting outward spells, breaking stubborn binds & drawing something towards us. Consider a dish for melted wax, fire safety & as another tool to add potency to your spell.
-
These candles are shaped like people, animals, or other symbolic forms. Each figure represents a specific energy or intent. For example, a figure shaped like a human might be used in spells for love, healing, or protection, while animal-shaped candles could represent qualities associated with that animal.
-
Around four inches tall, chime candles burn in under two hours. Short, focused spells for manifestation, unblocking & action are great to use with chime candles. When in stock (I burn through mine quickly!), I love to burn a chime candle during a daily yoga ritual, a bath spell or an evening wind-down.
-
Smaller than chime, but larger than birthday, Chanukah candles provide a pure foundation (they're kosher!) & steady flame for simple, focused spellwork. Much to the spirit of their original intention, Chanukah candles can remind us that we are always taken care of & abundance can always be accessed.
-
Small & thin, birthday candles burn quick & are therefore ideal for quick, simple spells. I use birthday candles for wish magick & to send out playful or joyous intentions.
You must use common sense when working with fire magic.
It is your duty to honor fire’s power with preparation & prudence.
Candle Wax
-
Made from the berries of a bayberry shrub, this wax has a distinct green color & earthy aroma, making it ideal for prosperity & good luck magick. Deeply connected to the earth element, bayberry wax creates abundance, wealth, protection, blessings & financial success.
-
Perhaps the most revered wax for magick, beeswax is as pure & natural as the bees that produced it. Beeswax burns cleanly & has a naturally sweet aroma. It is a beautiful wax for purification, healing, protection & love spells. Like bees, beeswax also carries the energy of community & abundance.
-
Coconut wax is another natural, sustainable choice, with a smooth texture & clean burn. It is a soothing wax that holds feminine energy & amplifies emotional & physical healing as well as beauty. Any spell with a focus on nurturing, self-care or emotional well-being is ideal for coconut wax. It is also a smart choice for water-based rituals or working with water magick.
-
Synthetic & transparent this wax is not as potent as natural wax, but it can be useful for spells on clarity, truths or emotional & mental blocks. Gel wax is often used in combination with other elements, such as crystals or herbs, that are suspended within the candle, which can enhance their power.
-
An affordable, synthetic wax, paraffin does not have the pure energy of natural wax, but they are versatile & easy to find. They can be useful & fun tools, especially in color magick.
-
Soy wax is a natural, plant-based wax that is considered sustainable with a clean burn. Highly versatile, soy candles are excellent for wealth, beauty, abundance & new beginning spells. Soy wax holds scent well & is an ideal choice for aromatherapy magick.
-
Made from animal fat, tallow candles have been used historically in many cultures. They carry the energy of sacrifice, life force & survival. Because of their origins, tallow candles are connected to primal energy, grounding & protection. Of course this wax is not the preferred choice for many & those who do choose to use tallow should do so rarely. This wax is extremely powerful for ancestral work, survival spells, primal energy & dark magick.

Dressing
-
I like to carve sigils into my candles, but you can add runes, words, names or any relevant iconography or symbolism you want into your candle. Some craftspeople whittle their candles & create intricate pieces, infused with deep magickal intention. If I am working with a sigil, I will carve it into pretty much any candle I burn during that period of intentionality. I use a long needle to draw each line piece by piece & clear away the excess wax.
-
Candles can be charged through various methods, similar to crystals (stay tuned for my Crystal Index Bible), under light, such as moonlight or sunlight, in water, such as rainwater, moon water, bath water or salt water & through meditation & visualization.
-
Roll the candle in herbs, fresh or dried flowers, add them to the surface of a poured candle, or fold them into the wax of your homemade candles. The magickal herb & flower section of this grimoire with be out early next year. Sometimes wrap my candle with ribbon, twine, vine or grass. You can also add paper with writing or images to your candle. In my spell work, I routinely plaster magickal papers to the side of my candle, place it underneath, bury in melted wax or burn it in the flame, depending on what I am working on.
-
The type of oil used can influence & enhance your spells or intentions. Stay tuned for my reference to essential oils. I like to dress intention candles & daily use for a quick cleanse or drawing spell. To draw something toward you, anoint the oil from the top & bottom into the center of the candle. To banish something, anoint the oil from the center to the ends. I will also add a few drops to the surface of poured candles from time to time, but use them excessively in my end of cycle & magnifying spells.

Even Burn with Minimal Wax Residue: This is typically a sign that the spell was successful & encountered minimal resistance.
Uneven Wax Melt: If the candle burns unevenly, leaving more wax on one side, it could indicate an imbalance in the spell or lingering obstacles.
Tears or Drips: If the wax forms tear-like drips, it might symbolize emotional energy, sorrow, or the need for healing. It can also mean that the spell is working through emotional barriers.
• • Forms in the Wax: Sometimes, the wax will create shapes or symbols as it melts. Interpreting these forms is often subjective & can vary based on your intuition or specific symbolism within your practice.
