Overview

Imbolc is a traditional Gaelic festival celebrated on February 1st. A reverence holiday for the goddess Brigid, it marks the midpoint between the winter solstice & the spring equinox. It is one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals, alongside Beltane, Lughnasadh & Samhain. Imbolc honors reawakening, return of light, life & fertility. It is a time of purification, renewal & preparation for new growth.

Origin

The origins of Imbolc are deeply rooted in ancient Celtic traditions, associated with the goddess Brigid. Goddess of fire, poetry, healing, smithcraft & fertility, Brigid brings light, warmth & inspiration.

Ritual

Imbolc rituals are centered around the themes of purification, light & the anticipation of growth. We light lots of candles during this festival, symbolic of Brigid’s fire. Some people also create Brigid Crosses or Brídeog for protection throughout the year.

Purification rituals are significant during Imbolc. House cleanings & personal purification rites prepare for not only our manifestations to come, but to integrate the uplevel of spiritual growth & healing we are currently receiving.

Then, we feast & have a fire.

Lore

Imbolc is steeped in lore that emphasizes the balance between darkness & light, winter & spring & death & rebirth. The festival marks a liminal time, a moment of transition, when the earth begins to stir from its winter sleep & the first signs of life & growth become visible. Brigid embodies transformation & renewal as a triple flame fire goddess, maiden, mother, crone.

It is a time to honor the earth's awakening, celebrate the return of light & prepare for growth & encourages reflection, purification & intention setting.
